MLB: Top Weekend Betting Trends

2008-06-27

The final installment of Interleague baseball for 2008 is on tap for this weekend, and the schedule is highlighted by inter-city showdowns in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. That’s right, the A.L. & N.L. representatives will go head-to-head for city bragging rights in each of those locales. The series’ are all part of a slate that is heavy on regional rivalries. Here’s a quick look at the action plus a top trend from each of the 15 weekend series.

In New York, the Yankees and Mets will actually play four games over the weekend, including a day-night split-city doubleheader on Friday. The nighttime Friday encounter as well as the rest of the series will be held at the Mets’ Shea Stadium. Neither club is enjoying its most satisfying season of recent memory, but it certainly isn’t too late. The Yankees trail Boston by 5-1/2 games in the A.L. East and Tampa Bay by 5 games for the wildcard position. They have gone on a 14-6 run since June 3rd however, and would love to go into the all-star break in a week-and-a-half with momentum. The Mets meanwhile, continue to just plod along, staying in close proximity of the N.L. East lead, 3-1/2 games behind Philadelphia. The Mets are 21-16 s in ’08 at home, while the Yankees boast a 20-19 road mark. The senior circuit club won both games when these team met in May, besting the host Yankees 7-4 & 11-2.

In Chicago, the Cubs and Sox will get together for the second straight weekend, this time from U.S. Cellular Field on the Windy City’s South Side. The Cubs swept the action last weekend and the Sox will hope to return the favor this time around. Both teams continue to lead their respective divisions, but the Sox lead is down to just ˝ game over red-hot Minnesota. They’ll be looking for help from Cubs’ rival Milwaukee as well this weekend, with the Twins and Brewers also playing three at the Metrodome. The Cubs, who come off a disappointing series at home against the Orioles where they won just one of three games, are 4-1/2 up on St. Louis. The N.L.’s best team continues to struggle on the road this year, going just 16-20, including 2-7 against teams with a winning record.

Finally, in Los Angeles, the team with the best mark in the Amercian League, the Angels, travels across town to take on the Dodgers, who have crept to within 3-1/2 games of the DBacks in the N.L. West, despite not playing all that well of late. The Halos are the best road team in the league, having gone 26-13 in ’08, and will wrap up a 9-game road swing with this series. The Dodgers are 19-19 at home, but just 3-9 in interleague play. In those 12 contests, they’ve been outscored by an average of 5.2-3.1 and have hit just .226.

Here’s a look at a top trend from every series on this weekend’s slate. For more great info, check out the GAME MATCHUPS page all weekend long.
